Finite element analysis (FEA) is a computerized method for predicting how a product reacts to real-world forces, vibration, heat, fluid flow, and other physical effects. Finite element analysis shows whether a product will break, wear out, or work the way it was designed. Finite element analysis software gives you a chance to quickly test your designs in controlled environments where you can study the physical effect of real-world stressors. In addition to speed, FEA software offers a substantial advantage in terms of cost and convenience over traditional product design practices. For a good amount of modeling, Elmer will get you really far. I tend to use it quite a bit at work for exploring simple R&D concepts. Combined with FreeCad for part design, SALOME for meshing (if you're looking at more complex meshing than Elmer provides), and ParaView for visualizations, you've got a pretty robust, entry level, free and open-source avenue for FEA.
