The factory manufactured frames in 'runs'. 100 or 1,000 or even perhaps 5,000. As these runs were done, the frames were each given a serial number. The parts were also given an assembly number to keep all of the matching and hand fitted parts together during the assembly process. Even stocks that were fitted to the frame received a serial number. The 1969 models are identified by the adding of an extra 0 at the end of the frame marking putting the number series into the 100,000's. Machines re-exported in 1970 were stamped with a 'Y' suffix to indicate that they were 1970 models and therefore eligible for the increased warranty.

Do the letter prefix's on the SN match the JAJ ?
or are they something completely different.
1989 _seems_ to be the changeover year to fitting the canti mounts & the 1 1/18th headset.
The cro mo Quad frames seem hard to exactly date from ~1986 to 1990 unless you bought it new or can find someone with a close serial number who bought it new like I did.
This one is an 1989 model according to the original owner , who I got the JAJXXX SN off...

All I need is a set of 1/8th headset shims to fit my 1inch Bottema's & Tuff neck into it & I'll have the ultimate best of both worlds Quadangle. More triangles in the frame than you can poke a stick at , cro mo tubing vs mild steel , good welding all round & a roomier ride.
Unless there are people who regularly thrash their loopback 1980 Quads on the track & street , with no worries about bending them....Brave souls with fat wallets
maybe.
Retro bikes have some distinct advantages , especially when it comes to Quadangles.
